MEMS AccelerometersMEMS Accelerometers on-line catalog MEMS is an acronym for Micro-Electro-Mechanical Systems. This technology utilizes micro-fabrication techniques for creating electro-mechanical devices on a silicon wafer substrate. Micromechanical components are fabricated using compatible "micromachining" processes that selectively etch away parts of the silicon wafer or add new structural layers to form the integrated mechanical and electromechanical devices. MEMS technology can offer high volume at a low cost. This has led to the integration of MEMS accelerometers into consumer items such as televisions, automobiles, cell phones, computers, and video games, however, the performance of such sensors is typically not as demanding as encountered during testing and analysis. On the other hand, PCB's MEMS accelerometers are designed to address the relatively low volume needs of precision test and measurement requirements in R&D, Automotive, and Aerospace & Defense applications. There are two primary sensing techniques employed in MEMS accelerometers - piezoresistive and capacitive. Piezoresistive devices exhibit a change in resistance with respect to applied acceleration. These units tend to be more rugged and are used for accelerometers that achieve higher amplitudes and higher frequency response. On the other hand, capacitive units offer higher sensitivities and are utilized for low amplitude, low frequency devices. Generally, it is not important to understand what the specific measurement technology is for a particular device, rather, it should be determined that the selected measurement tool possesses the performance characteristics needed to accomplish the necessary task. Applications for PCB's MEMS accelerometers include shock and vibration measurements for the following. Please contact us to discuss your specific requirements.
